Thanks!
Using the strip heater (as mentioned here http://lynxmotion.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7632&start=120) with a wire of temperature 300-400 degrees, the Acrylic bends very easily.

The brackets don't actually flex that much because they are always kept tight but if they can flex a bit to avoid shattering. The Acrylic isn't actually as bad as people say.

 Well I like it!

Also, none of my parts have shattered or anything yet so it seems to be holding out.

It's fine for toying around, but it can't be used the way you are using it commercially. ;)

Yeah, I suppose so.
But since I've started, I might as well finish in Acrylic although I'm looking for some ABS suppliers - I found one which sold this really nice dark red textured ABS but the minimum sheet size was something like 2.5x1.25m which was insane!

Also, what do you think about the brackets?

Thanks for the link! I got a little behind in the thread, I guess.

Just an update for the arm design for the Mantis - this is the basic structure and I'll develop it further (adding engravings, making it look cooler).

Just an update on the circuit board for the Mantis robot.

The board and everything works fine (WOOHOO! 8)) but the IC socket doesn't let the Atom Pro fit in properly so I'll be replacing that (I'll need to order one because I don't have any) and then I'll upload some photos - most likely date will be Monday because I've got some Further Maths catching up to do .

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't updated anything for a while (I'm a week late! Jeez ) - the further maths had really taken up time . Anyway, I got the PCB sorted so here's a video of it moving a leg. I should have the arms ready by Monday (I hope :D) and then the body plates for the bottom half by Friday.

Hi everyone! I've finished cutting out about 98% of the parts for the robot's torso and I'm going to start testing one of the arms now so I should hopefully be able to get a video of it working soon - while then, you'll have to settle for a photo.

Here's the video - the movements are a bit jerky at the moment but I was just testing if everything works (i.e. the servos don't fail under the load) so I'll upload a video with smoother movement later on or maybe tomorrow. Enjoy!

Hi again everyone! I've gotten some better movement with the arms and I think it looks like some kind of dancing move but I'll let you guys decide that.

Here's a video - ENJOY! :D

I take it that's a leg? You'll probably need some kind of rubber "boot" to get traction on the floor.

How well does it handle a load? What servos did you use again?

Nice!

Thanks for the comment!

It's technically an arm but as the video (which innerbreed posted) on the first page shows, the Praying Mantis uses it's arms as well as it's legs to walk (which I never realised before ). Most of the load will be taken by the four normal legs so the arms will be used for basic walking when using a hexapod walking gait but I haven't tested the load handling yet - I'll do that later on or maybe tomorrow. I was thinking of making some customized rubber boots for the ends but they'll be done later once I've got the basic structure ready.

The servos I'm using at the moment for the arms are HS-422's but I'll probably upgrade them once I've carried out a few more tests with the other arm (i.e. picking up objects, etc.). :D
