I would like to use the AL5D for random picking.

Is there any control software available that can receive position and orientation data
from an external system, calculate the moves and perform the right sequences and
relative subsequences based on the incoming data?

As I understand it, the RIOS is not capable. (?)

Any help appreciated...

I believe that RIOS has a socket server feature that would fit your requirements. I've never used RIOS to any great extent but if you check out the RIOS user manual I'm sure you could find the information you need.
